Maxwell An Exploration of Texture in Images Abstract: One of the most difficult tasks in computer vision is understanding, representing, and classifying textures. There are a number of different approaches to these tasks, but none are completely satisfying. We have been exploring a few questions motivated by the goal of being able to segment images with multiple textured and untexture regions. These questions include how to identify textured regions in an image, how best to implement pyramid style analysis of textures, how to estimate the size of a texture, and what representations of textures are stable and robust. Our explorations have led to some surprising results that challenge us to seek new ways of thinking about texture in images. Biography: Bruce A. Maxwell is an Associate Professor of Engineering at Swarthmore College. He holds a B.A. and B.S. from Swarthmore College, an M. Phil from Cambridge University, and a Ph.D. from the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. His research interests include computer vision, robotics, computer graphics, and data visualization and analysis. |
