Block Island is about 70 minutes by ferry off the coast of Rhode Island.
The island can also be reached by air. Because of limited air and ferry
connections, participants should plan to spend the nights of June 9,
10, 11 on the island.
The workshop will begin on Tuesday AM June 10
so those arriving arriving late on Monday the 9th will not miss
anything technical. The technical part of the workshop will
end about 6:00 pm on Wednesday June 11th.
Although there is air service from Westerly, R.I. the best way to get
to the island is via the ferry. While some ferries leave from New London,
CT, your best bet is to take one of the ferries which leave from Galilee,
R.I. - a small, interesting, commercial fishing town near Pt.
Judith. There are two ferry lines, the "High Speed Ferry" which
arrives at New Harbor and the slower but considerable larger and quite
comfortable Block Island
Ferry which arrives at Old Harbor. The latter is recommended because
Old Harbor is very close to the Spring House whereas New Harbor is
not.
Galilee is about two hours from New Haven by car and
an hour from Providence Airport. Don't take your car on the ferry!
There is ample protected parking right across from the ferry in Galilee.
The Block Island Ferry trip takes about 70 minutes and arrive at
the Island's only town of consequence, Old Harbor. The Spring
House is to your left as you leave the ferry - about half a
mile. The hotel is high on a hill and is visable from the ferry
as you approach the Island. The hotel is white with red trim and
Victorian architecture. A hotel van (usually grey in color) will
meet you at the ferry - no charge.
