GRASP Seminar: Yoshiaki Sakagami, Honda Research Institute USA Inc., “Honda Humanoid ASIMO: How to approach human like capability?”

October 24, 2008 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Abstract: A lot of autonomous robot has been developing in the world. However, almost robot are toy like, there are many restriction to use robot in human environment. ASIMO is most advanced humanoid robot that has potential supporting human activities on daily. Honda has been a good engineering work to make reliable hardware and system since 1986. However, a capability of ASIMO is still limited to do in general environment where people is living. Which technologies are important to get a performance doing daily tasks? Honda Research Institute USA, Inc (HRI-US) is focusing on intelligent function of robot that a capability of human-robot interaction, sophisticated task planning, dynamic machine control based on computer vision, recognition, scene understanding, stochastic based planning, and integration system. I’ll show results of our research that the capability of human robot interaction based on computer vision techniques. And then I’ll discuss also which technology will be key for future robot in order to be useful robot to support human activities.

Presenter

Yoshiaki Sakagami graduated from the Department of Mathematical Science at the Tokyo Denki University. He joined the Bullet Train (Shinkansen) development project, the recovery system from earthquake damages, the optimization of power supply for train in and other systems for the railroad (1-Dimension system). He joined Honda in 1986, where he developed a navigation system and an autonomous car that was controlled by image processing to extract the road area and its lane. His project realized full automatic driving on the highway in 1991. (2-Dimension system). After this project, Sakagami researched intelligence for autonomous machine like robots, driver support systems and human walking assist systems. He is interested in the architecture of robot planning, vision, human robot interaction, and network robotics. Sakagami is the Project Leader of intelligent ASIMO. (3-Dimension system) and was the Chief Engineer of the Honda Wako Research Center, Robotics Laboratory. Honda has presented the intelligent ASIMO that equipped a capability for example tracking human, face recognition, posture/gesture recognition, sound localization and voice recognition to interact with human and developed the environmental map system to navigate in room in 2002. He has been organizing computer science research, material science research and is president of Honda Research Institute USA, Inc. from 2006, where he is continuing a research computer science in order to realize more sophisticated intelligence system for robot and auto to find out 4-Dimension system;-)
