Celebrating 50 Years of Robotics: Symposium and Poster Session

December 11, 2009 @ 9:30 am

It has been 50 years since George Devol’s initial work on programmable
automation lead to the development of the first industrial robot, the Unimate,
in collaboration with Joseph Engelberger, and the world’s first industrial robot
manufacturing company was established. Robots are being used today to perform
surgeries, discover new drugs, serve as security guards, vacuum clean our
carpets and mow our lawns at home. The Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and
Opportunity, have answered deep scientific questions about Mars and extra
terrestrial life opening up avenues for space exploration that were not possible
fifty years ago. Robots are important to manufacturing, enabling the
high-quality, rapid manufacture of customized goods, and responsible for
significant increases in efficiency in production, from consumer goods to
industrial equipment. And robotics is playing an extraordinarily important role
in homeland security and defense by preventing highly trained soldiers from
coming in harm’s way and providing persistent surveillance in harsh environments
which ultimately minimizes the lost of human life. This symposium brings
together the top experts in robotics research and development who will highlight
the important achievements of the field and articulate a vision for the future
of this field. More Info
