Fall 2016 GRASP Seminar: Martin Buehler, Walt Disney Imagineering, “Robo-Innovation”

ABSTRACT

Walt Disney was a consummate innovator and technology disrupter in several fields, including robotics. Since the early fifties to today, and into the future, robotics has been and will be a key enabling technology for ever more authentic and interactive Guest experiences in our Parks. In this talk, Martin will share food for thoughts, and fun, and insights from his work in academia, various robotics industries, including from his current role at Disney Imagineering. This talk will also touch on opportunities and challenges for the future of robotics innovation and the role academia can play.

Martin is an Executive R&D Imagineer with Walt Disney Imagineering, where he leads Robotics and Artificial Intelligence developments. His passion is to translate new technologies into transformative new systems, capabilities and experiences that improve people’s lives. After an academic career in robotics at McGill University from 1991 to 2003, he has worked on robotics in industry at several companies, advancing consumer, defense, surgical, logistics and entertainment robotics. Martin is best known for breakthroughs in legged robots like BigDog and RHex. He holds several patents, served on the editorial boards of the top three robotics journals, is an IEEE Fellow and holds the Robotics Industry Association’s Engelberger Award for Technology.
