Spring 2016 GRASP Seminar Series: Patrick Meier, iRevolutions, “Humanitarians in the Sky”

ABSTRACT

Aerial Robotics represents the first wave of robotics to impact the humanitarian space. This talk will explain how aerial robotics was used in the aftermath of two major humanitarian disasters for disaster response and recovery. Lessons learned and best practices will be highlighted. In closing, the talk with outline concrete ways that students can get involved in the humanitarian robotics space.

Dr. Patrick Meier is an internationally recognized expert on humanitarian technology. His book, Digital Humanitarians, has been endorsed by the UN, Red Cross, World Bank, USAID, Harvard, MIT, Stanford and others. Over the past 14 years, Patrick worked in dozens of countries including the Sudan, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Liberia, Philippines, Nepal, Haiti and Vanuatu on a wide range of humanitarian projects with multiple international organizations including the United Nations and World Bank. He currently serves as a consultant to the World Bank, Facebook and Planet Labs, and previously co-directed the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative’s Program on Crisis Mapping.
