Spring 2024 GRASP on Robotics: John Doyle, California Institute of Technology, “Control/Architecture/Control”

February 2 @ 10:30 am - 11:45 am

This was a hybrid event with a VIRTUAL SPEAKER. There will be in-person attendance in Wu and Chen and virtual attendance…

ABSTRACT

This talk will describe progress in developing a universal theory of architectures for complex networks, motivated by and applied to aerospace, process control, internet, cyberphysical, ecosystems, multiscale physics, turbulence, biology, neuroscience, medicine, linguistics, and social systems.

Presenter

John Doyle

Jean-Lou Chameau Professor of Control and Dynamical Systems and BioEng. At Caltech since 1985. Education: BS&MS EE, MIT (1977), PhD Math, UC Berkeley (1984). Best known for outstanding students, colleagues, and family, and the shortest abstract in IEEE history.  Early research in robust control began in 1976 as consultant for Honeywell SRC.  Recent research interest is in mathematical foundations for a theory of architecture for complex bio, tech, med, eco, neuro, and social networks. Best paper prizes include IEEE Baker, IEEE TAC Axelby (3x), world top 10 in mathematics 1981-1993, AACC Schuck, ACM Sigcomm Best Paper and “test of time,” “Best Writing on Mathematics 2010,” and as “advisor/nominator” but not co-author on student prizes. Individual awards including IEEE Hickernell, Centennial, and Control Systems Field Award, AACC Eckman, and UC Berkeley Friedman, plus world and national records and championships in various sports.
